Julie & Julia

Oct 02, 2009 -- 5:45pm

Recently I saw "Julie And Julia".  I really wanted to see this movie for at least three reasons.  First of all, I'm a HUGE Meryl Streep fan..(I think I'm probably not alone in saying that she is the greatest actress of all time).  Secondly, Julia Child's presence was strongly felt in our household when my brother and I were growing up.  There were many afternoons when my mother was glued to to the TV watching and taking notes on the latest Julia Child recipe.  (My mom still watches the reruns).  By the way, her recipes were incredibly yummy, thanks of course to the greatest cook in the world.. my mom.  The third reason for me wanting to see this film was the casting of Amy Adams.  She was downright loveable in "Enchanted" and demonstrated intensity as well as versatility playing opposite Francis McDormand in "Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day".  So, did I like "Julie And Julia"?  The simple answer is I thought it was very good.  Notice I didn't say great..  I thought it fell just a tad short of all the hype and promotion it received.  For my money, (and I know I'm in the minority here), I thought Meryl Streep nailed a spot on impersonation of Julia Child, but could've utilized a little more of her energy, prowess, and realism in playing the actual character.  Don't get me wrong, she hit it out of the park with this very demanding role; it just wasn't the usual Meryl Streep grand slam.  Other that, I loved the two life stories of  Julia Child and Julie Powell (played by Ms. Adams), and how they paralleled each other; (and sshhh, don't tell anybody here, but I actually thought Amy Adams stole the show).  'Just one person's opinion; and like I said before, that's coming from a big Meryl Streep fan.

David Byrne Book

Aug 18, 2009 -- 3:05pm

Hey there,
It's sooo nice to finally have a long stretch of rain-free sunny weather!

I thought this was cool and interesting...David Bryne (from Talking Heads) has written a new book called Bicycle Diaries.  Now a lot of poeple know that David is a bicycling enthusiast....  But, recently, he discovered folding bikes and as a result decided to pedal his way through some of the world's most exciting cities, including London, Istanbul, San Francisco,  and Buenos Aires.

The book, in part, is about his impressions of each city and the people he met along the way.  "Bicycle Diaries" is in stores now..  For more info, you can check out www.davidbyrne.com

Now...Let's hope for a rain free Indian summer!
